Daphni

Under the name Daphni, Dan Snaith has, since the early 2010s, developed a side more directly aimed at the club, alongside Caribou and following his early releases as Manitoba. Born in London, Ontario, and raised in Dundas, Ontario, the Canadian musician explores a precise and flexible dance electronics situated between house, techno, off‑kilter disco and leftfield, with a marked emphasis on loops, percussion, sampled voices and long progressions inherited from mixing. Daphni took shape through a series of maxi singles before the album Jiaolong in 2012, followed by Joli Mai in 2017 and Cherry in 2022; the EP Sizzling appeared in 2019. Whereas Caribou favors the song format and pop songwriting, Daphni progresses by repetition, subtle variations and rhythmic tension. As a DJ, Daphni is part of the international club and festival circuit, with appearances at venues such as Fabric, Panorama Bar, Nowadays, Nitsa and Printworks. Daphni thus remains the most direct framework for Dan Snaith’s work on dance music.
