Joy Orbison

Joy Orbison is the alias of London producer and DJ Peter O’Grady, who from the late 2000s became associated with the shifting British electronic scene between dubstep, house and UK garage. He first drew attention in 2009 with the maxi single “Hyph Mngo / Wet Look” on Hotflush, often cited as a landmark of post-dubstep, and followed with a series of singles and EPs that combine pronounced basslines, fractured rhythms and more introspective melodic textures. His work moves between hybrid house, minimal techno, breakbeat, slowed jungle and ambient influences, within a club-oriented aesthetic that remains focused on dancefloor dynamics while playing with vocal collages and tempo variation. From 2011 he developed his own label Hinge Finger with Will Bankhead, which became a principal outlet for his releases, notably the “Ellipsis” maxi and the “Slipping” EP in 2019. In 2021 Joy Orbison released the long-form project “still slipping vol. 1” on XL Recordings, consolidating his bass-music experiments and more pop-leaning excursions. Regularly appearing in clubs and at festivals, he has built a discography over the years marked by recurring collaborations — notably with Boddika and Overmono — while remaining tied to London’s electronic music networks.
