King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

Formed in Melbourne in 2010, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard has built itself around a core of six musicians led by Stu Mackenzie, alongside Joey Walker, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Cook Craig, Lucas Harwood and Michael Cavanagh. The Australian group initially developed a sound blending garage rock, surf rock and lo‑fi psychedelia on 12 Bar Bruise (2012), before quickly broadening its terrain toward progressive rock, psychedelic pop, acoustic folk, jazz‑rock, heavy metal, and, at times, a more electronic approach. This constant oscillation between short formats, long repetitive pieces and concept albums has become one of the band’s defining traits, with milestones such as I’m in Your Mind Fuzz (2014), Nonagon Infinity (2016), Flying Microtonal Banana (2017) — the first installment of a cycle centered on microtones — or Infest the Rats’ Nest (2019), oriented toward thrash metal. In 2017, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard released five studio albums in the same year, then continued at that pace with K.G. (2020), L.W. (2021), Butterfly 3000 (2021), Omnium Gatherum (2022), Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava (2022), PetroDragonic Apocalypse (2023) and The Silver Cord (2023). On stage, the band alternates marathon concerts, highly changing repertoires and long sequences of improvisation, which has brought it closer to the jam scene while maintaining a highly structured writing. In 2024, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard further expanded its discography with Flight b741.
