The Avalanches

Formed in Melbourne in the late 1990s, The Avalanches developed an approach to sound collage at the crossroads of electronic music, hip-hop, psychedelic pop and dance music, underpinned by dense and highly crafted sampling work. Initially conceived as a collective, the project stabilized around Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi after several lineup changes. The Avalanches emerged with Since I Left You in 2000, an album that became a touchstone of sampledelic music for its fluid chaining of fragments borrowed from diverse sources, blending disco grooves, orchestral textures, reworked vocals and hip-hop rhythms. After a long period marked by rumors of new recordings, more spaced-out mixes and live appearances, The Avalanches returned with Wildflower in 2016, followed by We Will Always Love You in 2020, two albums that prolong this montage-writing while opening their sound to a more cosmic pop, airier arrangements and numerous guest vocals. In concert and in DJ sets, The Avalanches move between clubs, international festivals and electronic scenes, with an aesthetic that links mix culture, pop memory and sonic narration.
