LCD Soundsystem
Formed in Brooklyn in 2002 around James Murphy, co-founder of the DFA Records label, LCD Soundsystem developed at the intersection of dance-punk, dance-rock, electronic rock and alternative dance, with an aesthetic that blends post-punk tension, disco pulse and club-music formats. Initially driven by a series of singles released between 2002 and 2004, including Losing My Edge, they opened their discography with the album LCD Soundsystem in 2005, followed by 45:33 in 2006, Sound of Silver in 2007 and This Is Happening in 2010. On stage the group has taken the form of an expanded ensemble around James Murphy, notably featuring Nancy Whang, Pat Mahoney, Tyler Pope, Al Doyle and, at various times, Phil Mossman or Korey Richey. LCD Soundsystem’s sound rests on repetitive basslines, sparse keyboard motifs, angular guitars and songwriting that alternates spoken-sung delivery, irony and more direct melodies. After announcing a split in 2011 and playing a farewell show at Madison Square Garden, LCD Soundsystem resumed activity in 2015, returned to touring and festivals, and released American Dream in 2017. Since then they have continued with stage residencies and new material, including New Body Rhumba in 2022 and X-Ray Eyes in 2024.
