Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
Active since the mid-2010s, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets emerged from Perth, Western Australia, out of the local neo-psych scene driven by independent clubs and the national touring circuit. Founded around songwriter and guitarist Jack McEwan, the band developed a dense, energetic brand of psychedelic rock characterized by heavily saturated guitars, multi-layered arrangements and a taste for rhythmic ruptures, where garage rock, prog influences and hints of stoner intersect. They drew attention with a string of self-released records before issuing High Visceral, Pt. 1 in 2016 and High Visceral, Pt. 2 in 2017, releases that established their aesthetic of walls of sound and repetitive melodic motifs. With And Now for the Whatchamacallit in 2019, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets tightened their songwriting into more direct formats while retaining a richly textured approach, continued on Shyga! The Sunlight Mound in 2021 — dominated by rapid sequences and a more upfront register — and on Night Gnomes in 2022, where the band explored darker, more atmospheric moods. On stage, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets translate these compositions into high-intensity sets, which have taken them well beyond Australia and positioned them within the international network of contemporary psych-rock acts.
