Hoshi
Under the stage name Hoshi, singer-songwriter Mathilde Gerner, born in 1996 in Versailles, is part of the new francophone pop scene, situated between chanson, variété and rock influences. Initially active online and in small high-school bands, Hoshi was noticed in the mid-2010s for covering songs in French and English, before turning to her own compositions. The single “Comment je vais faire” and then the song “Ta marinière” in 2017 established Hoshi in a register of melodic, text-driven pop, where a low voice and a very personal narrative occupy a central position. Her debut album “Il suffit d’y croire” was released in 2018, followed by “Sommeil levant” in 2020 and “Étoile flippante” in 2023 — three records that continue Hoshi’s exploration of intimacy, identity, health and romantic relationships. Influenced by an interest in Japanese culture, which inspired her stage name, Hoshi develops a direct and often autobiographical writing style, nourished by her experience on stages and festivals in France and by her public engagement on LGBTQI+ issues and everyday violence.
