Booka Shade
Formed in Frankfurt am Main in the mid-1990s, the duo Booka Shade brings together Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier to produce electronic music that sits between house, tech house and a synth-pop heritage. Later based in Berlin, Booka Shade helped found the Get Physical Music label in 2002 alongside M.A.N.D.Y. and DJ T., a platform that supported the emergence of a minimal, melodic scene focused on the dancefloor. Their debut album, Memento (2004), established a sound built on repetitive structures, supple basslines and harmonic pads; Movements (2006) continued this approach and includes tracks such as Body Language (with M.A.N.D.Y.) and In White Rooms. The Sun & The Neon Light (2008) and More! (2010) opened Booka Shade up to song formats and slower tempos, while Eve (2013) and Galvany Street (2017), created in close collaboration with vocalist Craig Walker, developed the vocal side further. With Cut The Strings (2018) and Dear Future Self (2020), the duo returned to a more club-oriented aesthetic while maintaining accessible melodic songwriting focused on contrasts between rhythmic tension and cinematic atmospheres, which Booka Shade presents both live and in DJ sets on international stages.
