Chalk
Based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Chalk is the project of musician‑filmmaker duo Ross Cullen and Benedict Goddard, blending abrasive rock, post‑punk and electronic textures. Chalk’s sound rests on taut rhythms bordering on techno and drum‑and‑bass, saturated guitars and a chant‑like vocal delivery that draws as much from spoken‑word as from cold‑wave, all supported by a visual approach shaped by their filmmaking practice. Emerging in the early 2020s, the band gradually carved out a place on the Irish and then the British alternative scene, playing small independent venues and support slots before touring internationally. Chalk’s debut EP, Conditions (2023), defined the contours of this dark, physical aesthetic—between industrial influences, club culture and punk energy. In 2025 Chalk expanded their live activity with tours across the UK and Europe and appearances at festivals such as Glastonbury and Bilbao BBK Live, while receiving regular backing from specialist media and radio outlets including The Independent, NME, Rolling Stone UK, Rough Trade, BBC 6 Music and KEXP, which have championed the release of their singles and audiovisual work.
