Big Special

Formed in the West Midlands, UK, Big Special is a duo whose writing is shaped by the region’s post‑industrial landscape and by British punk and spoken‑word culture. The band brings together singer‑songwriter Joe Hicklin and drummer Callum Moloney; together they craft a taut rock where spoken‑sung vocals mingle with heavy rhythms, propulsive bass lines and atmospheres that sometimes verge on post‑punk and industrial. Big Special’s lyrics address everyday life in working‑class communities, mental health, and social and political frustrations, delivered with a very frank diction and a strong storytelling sense. The project began to gain attention in the early 2020s through several tracks released online, before increasing their live presence on the UK independent venue circuit. That period culminated in a first album, Postindustrial Hometown Blues, released in 2024 on SO Recordings, which captures in the studio the contrast between raw energy, spoken tension and the more melancholic melodies already audible on stage and on the band’s early recordings.
