Wunderhorse
Launched in the UK in 2020 by Jacob Slater, Wunderhorse began as a solo project developed after the end of the punk trio Dead Pretties, while Slater split his time between London and Newquay in Cornwall and continued writing his songs. The project soon took the form of a band with Harry Fowler on guitar, Jamie Staples on drums and Pete Woodin on bass, since replaced by Seb Byford. Wunderhorse operates in an alternative rock register nourished by indie rock, grunge and garage rock, with guitar-centred tracks, pronounced melodic tension and a vocal delivery that retains an element of sparseness. The first album, Cub, was released in 2022, featuring songs written by Slater; Wunderhorse then toured extensively, playing alongside Fontaines D.C., Pixies, Foals, Sam Fender and Declan McKenna, and appearing at Glastonbury in 2023. In 2024 the band released Midas, a second album recorded with Craig Silvey, which extends this direct, nervous songwriting while slightly broadening the textures. Between a singer-songwriter project and a group dynamic, Wunderhorse fits within the continuity of contemporary British rock, committed to efficient formats and a direct approach to songs.
