IDLES
Formed in Bristol, UK in 2009 around singer Joe Talbot and bassist Adam Devonshire, IDLES developed a tense rock sound blending punk, post‑punk and post‑hardcore. The lineup solidified with guitarists Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan and drummer Jon Beavis, initially active on the British small‑venue circuit before making a name for themselves on festival stages across Europe and beyond. After the EPs “Welcome” (2012), “Meat” (2015) and the associated project “Meta” (2015), IDLES released their debut album “Brutalism” in 2017, marked by a dense sound, fast rhythms and confrontational lyrics. With “Joy as an Act of Resistance” (2018) and “Ultra Mono” (2020) they refined a songwriting approach that tackles social issues, British politics, grief and masculinities in a direct way, often over repetitive structures and chanted choruses. “Crawler” (2021) introduced slower tempos and a more introspective dimension, while “TANGK” (2024) continued the exploration of abrasive rock that opens up to more melodic nuances. Rooted in the Bristol scene but aimed at an international audience, IDLES remain identified with a collective, physical and highly vocal approach to contemporary indie rock.
