Andy Stott

Based in Manchester, Andy Stott has been developing an electronic music that sits between slowed-down techno, dub techno, ambient and experimentation since the mid-2000s, characterized by heavy rhythms, hazy textures and a marked taste for contrasts between abrasive material and melodic elements. Andy Stott released his first records on the Manchester label Modern Love, notably the album Merciless in 2006 and Unknown Exception in 2008, before a clearer aesthetic shift with the EPs Passed Me By and We Stay Together in 2011, where his writing became denser, slower and more physical. This evolution continued on Luxury Problems (2012), Faith in Strangers (2014), Too Many Voices (2016) and Never the Right Time (2021). From Luxury Problems onward, the vocal presence of Alison Skidmore, his former piano teacher, introduced a more airy counterpoint into Andy Stott’s universe. Alongside his solo work, Andy Stott has also recorded under the name Andrea and formed the duo Millie & Andrea with Miles Whittaker, another figure of Manchester’s electronic scene, releasing the album Drop the Vowels in 2014. His productions circulate both in club contexts and on stages devoted to adventurous electronic music and more immersive listening formats.
