Floating Points

Born in Manchester in 1986, Sam Shepherd brought Floating Points to prominence in London in the late 2000s, after studying piano at Chetham’s School of Music and earning a doctorate in neuroscience at University College London. The Floating Points project sits between electronic music and jazz, employing an instrumental language that blends broken beat, ambient, abstract house and jazz-derived harmonic writing, often in formats that extend beyond the club. Floating Points co-founded Eglo Records in 2008 with Alexander Nut and launched Pluto Records in 2015, while developing a DJ career—notably at Plastic People—and broader live configurations with the Floating Points Ensemble. After several EPs and singles around the 2010s, Floating Points released Elaenia in 2015, Reflections - Mojave Desert in 2017 and Crush in 2019, where the rhythmic approach became more direct and fragmented. In 2021 Floating Points released Promises with Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra, then composed for the ballet Mere Mortals in 2024 and released the album Cascade the same year.
