Born in Telford, England, Darren J. Cunningham produces electronic music under the name Actress that blends experimental techno, microhouse, ambient and more abstract forms, often featuring off-kilter rhythms, muted textures and a deliberately unstable relationship to the pulse. After beginnings in the London underground, Actress co-founded Werkdiscs in 2004 — initially as a club night and later as a label — which became a central framework for his career. His discography is built around Hazyville (2008), Splazsh (2010), R.I.P. (2012), Ghettoville (2014) and AZD (2017), where he developed an increasingly fragmented compositional approach, moving between dancefloor references and a focus on the erasure of sound. In 2015 he contributed to the DJ-Kicks series and broadened his field further with LAGEOS (2018), conceived in collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra. Subsequent releases include 88 (2020), Karma & Desire (2020) — featuring contributions from Sampha — LXXXVIII (2023) and Statik (2024). Alongside his albums, Actress remains active as a DJ, remixer and composer for audiovisual formats and exhibition contexts.
