Autechre

The English duo Autechre, formed in Rochdale in the Manchester area, comprises Sean Booth and Rob Brown. Both were involved in local electro and hip‑hop scenes from the late 1980s before joining Warp Records in the early 1990s. Positioned within the experimental branch of techno and electronica — frequently associated with IDM — the project established itself with Incunabula (1993) and Amber (1994), which blend ambient textures, repetitive rhythmic motifs and fragmented melodies. With Tri Repetae (1995) and Chiastic Slide (1997) their writing densified around more mechanical structures and industrial timbres, marking a shift toward an increasingly abstract approach. LP5 (1998) and Confield (2001) extended this trajectory with heavily deconstructed pieces characterized by unstable rhythms and rigorous work on micro‑variation, while Draft 7.30 (2003) and Untilted (2005) explored even more angular assemblages. From Quaristice (2008) onward the discography opened onto long, modular formats, continued by Oversteps (2010) and Exai (2013), and later the extended series elseq 1–5 (2016) and NTS Sessions 1–4 (2018), which foreground nearly continuous compositional flow. The albums SIGN and PLUS, released in 2020, refocused this exploration into tighter forms that oscillate between harmonic pads and complex percussive sequences; on stage the duo favors immersive performances, often played in darkness so that the sound itself carries the experience. Parallel to this, both musicians contribute to the Gescom collective and produce numerous remixes, embedding their work in a dense network of British experimental electronic artists.
