David August
Born in Hamburg in 1990 as David Nattkemper, David August has built a career situated between Germany and Italy, notably tied to Palestrina, his maternal family's place of origin. Trained early in classical piano and later active on Hamburg’s club scene, he came to attention in the late 2000s with electronic productions leaning toward melodic house and techno, following his residency at club EGO. The EP Instant Harmony (2010) and the album Times (2013) mark a first shift toward a broader compositional approach, in which the dance-track structure opens onto acoustic textures, ambient elements and a more narrative live practice. With Epikur (2014) and numerous remixes or reconstructions for other artists he further expanded his vocabulary. His trajectory then moved toward more experimental forms, visible in his collaboration with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin for X‑Poème Symphonique (2016) and in the founding of his label 99CHANTS. On that label he released DCXXXIX A.C. (2018), an ambient and drone work conceived as a long continuum, followed the same year by D’Angelo, a more hybrid album threaded with elements of post‑rock, choral music and electronics. With VĪS (2023), David August continues this inquiry at the intersection of concert performance, composition and sound installation.
