Weval

Based in Amsterdam, the Dutch electronic duo Weval comprises Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers. Initially active in the audiovisual field, they turned to music production in the early 2010s. The project develops at the crossroads of electronica, slow house and alternative pop, with a strong focus on synthetic textures, supple bass lines and the recurrent use of treated voices as a fully melodic element. After their first EP, Half Age, released in 2013 on the Dutch label Atomnation, Weval joined the German label Kompakt, releasing the EP Easier in 2014 and their debut full-length Weval in 2016, followed by The Weight in 2019. The EP Changed for the Better, published in 2020, opened a phase in which the duo emphasised song structures and the contrasts between rhythmic tension and more introspective atmospheres. In 2023 the album Time Goes was released on the Technicolour label, affiliated with Ninja Tune, extending this direction toward electronic music that is both club-oriented and introspective, conceived for the live stage as well as for domestic listening, with constant attention to harmonic nuance.
