The Courteeners
Born in Middleton, Greater Manchester, The Courteeners formed in 2006 around singer-songwriter Liam Fray with Michael Campbell, Daniel Moores and Mark Cuppello, before producer and bassist Joe Cross became a permanent member and Elina Lin later joined on keyboards. Initially rooted in the Manchester scene through gigs and word of mouth, the band developed a British-tradition indie rock sound shaped by post-Britpop and the post-punk revival, with direct, melodic songs centred on Fray’s songwriting. Debut album St. Jude was released in 2008, followed by Falcon in 2010 and Anna in 2013, when the band shortened its name to Courteeners. Releases from Concrete Love (2014) to Mapping the Rendezvous (2016) showed broader songwriting and a clearer incorporation of synth-pop textures without abandoning their rock foundation. More. Again. Forever. came out in 2020, followed by Pink Cactus Café in 2024. A regular presence on Britain’s major stages, The Courteeners have played Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds and TRNSMT and shared bills with Morrissey, The Stone Roses, Kings of Leon and Noel Gallagher, while retaining strong roots in northern England and Manchester’s musical identity.
