Shed Seven

Formed in York in 1990, Shed Seven belong to the wave of British bands of the 1990s, with a sound that sits between britpop, alternative rock and indie rock, built on melodic guitars, straightforward choruses and a very upfront stage energy. Around singer Rick Witter and bassist Tom Gladwin, and with guitarists who varied over time — first Joe Johnson and later Paul Banks — the band first made its mark on the UK live circuit before signing to Polydor and releasing Change Giver in 1994, followed by A Maximum High in 1996 and Let It Ride in 1998. Those three records established Shed Seven among the acts regularly played in britpop-era England. After Paul Banks left in the late 1990s, Shed Seven continued with Truth Be Told in 2001, but split in 2003 amid tensions with their labels. The 2007 reunion revived the band’s live activity, and they returned to the studio with Instant Pleasures in 2017. Since then Shed Seven have alternated tours and new recordings with a refreshed line-up that includes Tim Wills and Rob Maxfield, heard on A Matter of Time in 2024 and on Liquid Gold the same year, an album of reworkings and re-recordings of their repertoire.
