Avatar
Formed in the early 2000s in Gothenburg, Sweden, Avatar began within the local melodic death‑metal tradition before evolving a more theatrical, hybrid identity. Fronted by singer Johannes Eckerström and built around a five‑piece line‑up of guitars, bass and drums, the band now blends modern metal, touches of groove, classic heavy influences and an unsettling circus‑like atmosphere, supported by highly crafted stage imagery. Avatar’s early albums, "Thoughts of No Tomorrow" (2006) and "Schlacht" (2007), remain close to melodeath conventions, while "Avatar" (2009) marks a shift toward more direct songwriting. The turning point came with "Black Waltz" (2012) and "Hail the Apocalypse" (2014), which established Avatar on European and North American stages through catchier songs and a character‑driven show. The concept album "Feathers & Flesh" (2016) deepened the band’s narrative streak, followed by the more rock‑oriented, anthemic "Avatar Country" (2018). With "Hunter Gatherer" (2020) and "Dance Devil Dance" (2023) Avatar hardened their sound again while retaining the mix of accessible melodies, heavy riffs and carnival staging that defines the group’s identity.
