Holding Absence
Formed in Cardiff in 2015, Holding Absence grew within the British alternative rock scene with a sound that blends melodic post-hardcore, emo and post-rock textures bordering on dreamcore. After a run of singles in 2015, the band took on its most recognisable shape when vocalist Lucas Woodland joined in 2016, then delivered releases that placed them on British and European stages — from Download to Slam Dunk — and on multiple tours alongside modern post-hardcore acts. Holding Absence released a split EP with Loathe in 2018 before their self-titled debut in 2019, followed by The Greatest Mistake of My Life in 2021 and The Noble Art of Self Destruction in 2023. Their writing rests on a balance of tension and melody, with expansive choruses, airy guitars and an emotional intensity firmly rooted in rock. The lineup has shifted several times over the years; Holding Absence now centres on Lucas Woodland, Scott Carey and Benjamin Elliott. Shared releases with Loathe and later Alpha Wolf further clarify the band’s position between modern post-hardcore, atmospheric rock and emo sensibilities.
