FKA twigs
Born in 1988 in Cheltenham, England, to a family of Jamaican, English, and Spanish heritage, Tahliah Debrett Barnett developed dance, singing, and theatre at an early age before moving to London as a teenager, where she worked as a dancer in music videos and on the club scene. Under the name FKA twigs, she emerged in the early 2010s with EP1 (2012) and EP2 (2013), followed by the visual EP M3LL155X (2015), which established a songwriting style blending electronic R&B, trip hop, avant-pop, and experimental influences, carried by a frequently processed voice and fragmented structures. The album LP1 (2014), released on the London label Young Turks, deepened this mix of minimalist rhythms, digital textures, and intimate melodies, with a strong focus on choreography and imagery. Magdalene (2019) introduced more organic arrangements, an expanded vocal range, and themes centered on vulnerability, spirituality, and power dynamics, while the mixtape Caprisongs (2022) moved closer to the sounds of London’s club culture by incorporating afrobeats, dancehall, and alternative pop. A singer-songwriter and producer, FKA twigs directs or co-directs numerous videos and stage works, in which contemporary dance, digital imagery, and references to fashion and the visual arts play a central role. Her regular collaborations with producers from electronic music and R&B, as well as her forays into film and projects with cultural or fashion brands, extend a transdisciplinary practice that connects performance, sound, and visual storytelling.
