Arca

Born in Caracas in 1989 and based in Barcelona, Alejandra Ghersi Rodríguez performs as Arca and produces experimental electronic music where abrasive textures, deconstructed rhythms, ambient, avant-pop, IDM and borrowings from reggaeton intersect. After releasing tracks under the name Nuuro, Arca emerged in the early 2010s with the EPs Baron Libre, Stretch 1 and Stretch 2, and the mixtape &&&&& (2013), which drew attention for its deconstructed approach to hip-hop and club forms. Concurrently, Arca worked as a producer and co-writer for Kanye West on Yeezus (2013) and for FKA twigs on EP2 (2013) and LP1 (2014), before embarking on a sustained artistic dialogue with Björk on Vulnicura (2015) and Utopia (2017). Her solo discography continued with Xen (2014), Mutant (2015) and Arca (2017) — an album that foregrounds her voice — followed by the Kick series: Kick I (2020), Kick II, Kick III, Kick IIII and Kick IIIII (2021), which further broadened her range between mutant pop, club tracks and more atmospheric pieces. Arca operates both within electronic music circuits and in audiovisual performance formats, with work that places significant emphasis on questions of the body, identity and transformation.
