The Dare
Born in West Hollywood and raised in the Seattle area before moving to Portland and then New York, Harrison Patrick Smith first developed an indie rock path under the name Turtlenecked, a project active in the Pacific Northwest scene with several self-released releases, including Pure Plush Bone Cage in 2016, Vulture in 2017, then Kapow! and the EP Cherish in 2020. Under the name The Dare, which he launched in the early 2020s from New York, he shifts his writing toward a cross between dance-punk, electroclash, electropop and new rave, in a more direct format, focused on club rhythms, dry or abrasive guitars and a nervous spoken-sung vocal style. The track 'Girls', released in 2022, marks this shift and establishes The Dare in a renewal linked to downtown New York scenes and the indie sleaze aesthetic. In 2023, The Dare released The Sex EP, then in 2024 its first album, What’s Wrong with New York?, while appearing on rock, pop and club stages, both live and in DJ sets with his Freakquencies night. His career also intersects with current pop and electronic artists: The Dare has opened for Yves Tumor and Charli XCX, and co-produced 'Guess' for Brat’s deluxe edition in 2024.
