Princess Superstar
Born Concetta Kirschner in Spanish Harlem, New York, in 1971, Princess Superstar entered the American independent hip‑hop scene by blending rap, pop and electronic sounds. After spending her childhood in Pennsylvania, she returned to New York in the early 1990s, became involved in the alternative circuit and began performing as Princess Superstar, developing a style based on a direct flow, autobiographical lyrics and blunt humor. Her first albums, Strictly Platinum (1996) and CEO (1997), were released on her own label, A Big Rich Major Label, placing her within New York’s underground rap network where she worked with local DJs and producers. With Last of the Great 20th Century Composers (2000) and Princess Superstar Is (2001), she further bridged hip‑hop, electro and pop, leading to collaborations such as with Moby in the early 2000s. The album My Machine (2005), conceived as a science‑fiction narrative, deepened this fusion of rap, electroclash and club influences. Her collaboration with Dutch producer Mason on the track “Perfect (Exceeder)” then established her in international club circuits, with a steady presence in DJ sets and on European electro stages. Active both in the studio and live, since the second half of the 2000s she has alternated between single releases, more experimental projects and DJ work, while maintaining strong roots in New York hip‑hop culture and the intersections between rap and electronic music.
