Arlo Parks
Between indie pop and hushed soul, Arlo Parks has developed since the late 2010s an intimate writing style that blends song, poetry and spoken word. Born Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho in 2000 in Hammersmith, west London, to a family with Nigerian, Chadian and French roots, Arlo Parks first emerged on the London scene with the single “Cola” in 2018, followed by the EPs “Super Sad Generation” and “Sophie” in 2019, released on the independent label Beatnik Creative. Her music combines understated pop melodies, rhythms drawn from contemporary R&B and touches of bedroom pop, carried by a soft voice and a strong narrative sense, often focusing on adolescence, mental health and relationships. After signing with Transgressive Records, she released her debut album “Collapsed in Sunbeams” in 2021, which established her style internationally, and “My Soft Machine” in 2023, where her songwriting gained density while remaining deeply personal. Alongside her records, Arlo Parks has pursued occasional collaborations within the British pop and alternative scene, performed at festivals across Europe and North America, and continued her work as a writer, integrating her poetry into her approach to composition.
