Ruti
Born in Thurrock, Essex, Ruti Olajugbagbe has since the late 2010s developed a writing style situated between pop, folk, light soul and touches of jazz, carried by a flexible voice and an intimate register. Ruti first became known in 2018 by winning the seventh season of The Voice UK, where her rendition of “Dreams” by the Cranberries marked the start of her national visibility. After this exposure, Ruti released the EP Racing Cars in 2019 on Polydor, then pursued a more personal path with All at Once in 2021. The following years show an evolution toward a freer alternative pop in arrangements and textures, evident on MixTea_MilkTape! in 2023 and then on the EP Lungs in 2024. Ruti's repertoire blends direct melodies, introspective writing and influences ranging from contemporary folk to an organic pop sometimes tinged with soft R&B. Over the years, Ruti also appears alongside other artists in occasional collaborations, notably with Bad Sounds, Girls of the Internet, Show Dem Camp, The Cavemen, or Khushi, which illuminates the opening of her universe to neighboring pop, soul and electronic scenes. Between independent releases and stints at different labels, Ruti builds a continuous path, centered on the song and on a sober, sensitive and mobile aesthetics.
