Loraine James
Born in Enfield, north London, Loraine James has been developing an electronic body of work since the mid-2010s that sits between IDM, ambient, broken rhythms, fragmented textures and more melodic piano lines. After several self-released works uploaded to Bandcamp from 2015, she issued Detail in 2017 on Fu Inle, then joined Hyperdub — an important frame in her trajectory at the crossroads of club and experimental scenes. For You and I (2019) more clearly established her language: nervy assemblages, tempo ruptures and intimate material, continued by the EPs Hmm and Nothing in 2020. With Reflection (2021) she opened her music further to voices and to contrasts between rhythmic abstraction, emotive pads and personal writing. In 2022 she also released 053 with TSVI and developed the alias Whatever the Weather, the more ambient and minimal side of her work, launched with Whatever the Weather and continued with Whatever the Weather II in 2025. Under her own name she also released Building Something Beautiful for Me in 2022, inspired by the work of Julius Eastman, followed by Gentle Confrontation in 2023.
