Space Afrika

Between Manchester and Berlin, Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang, working under the name Space Afrika, develop a body of work at the crossroads of ambient, dub, experimental electronic, slowed-down trip-hop, and a writing style that at times recalls contemporary music. Active since the mid-2010s, the duo shapes slow, textured, and highly spatial pieces, nourished by fragmented vocals, diffuse bass, hazy pads, and a pronounced attention to urban atmospheres. After several cassette and vinyl releases, including Somewhere Decent To Live (2018) and Above The Concrete / Below The Concrete (2020), Space Afrika expands its format with Honest Labour (2021), an album built with multiple guests and centered on withdrawn, taut, introspective electronics. The project continues this evolution with A Grisaille Wedding (2023), then HYBTWIBT, where Space Afrika maintains this very physical relation to sound while opening its compositions further to speech, silence, and collage forms. Present in both club contexts and more experimental lineups, Space Afrika places its music in a space where sound material, the memory of places, and rhythm remain tightly linked.
