Periphery
Formed in Washington, D.C. in 2005 around guitarist Misha Mansoor, Periphery grew out of demos released online and became one of the bands associated with the rise of djent in the 2010s. Periphery’s sound blends progressive metal, progressive metalcore and the staccato rhythms of djent, with a strong focus on contrasts between highly technical passages, melodic choruses and more atmospheric textures. After several early lineup changes, the band settled into a lasting configuration with Spencer Sotelo on vocals, Misha Mansoor, Jake Bowen and Mark Holcomb on guitars, Matt Halpern on drums, while Adam “Nolly” Getgood remained involved in studio work. The discography includes Periphery (2010), Periphery II: This Time It’s Personal (2012), the two-part Juggernaut: Alpha and Juggernaut: Omega (2015), Periphery III: Select Difficulty (2016), Periphery IV: Hail Stan (2019) and Periphery V: Djent Is Not a Genre (2023), as well as the EPs Icarus (2011) and Clear (2014). Periphery has toured metal and progressive stages across North America and Europe, notably with Dream Theater, and has maintained a significant in-house production role evident in both the writing and the sound of their records.
