Protest The Hero
Formed in Whitby, Ontario, Protest the Hero originally performed as Happy Go Lucky in the late 1990s before adopting their current name in 2001. The Canadian band blends progressive metal, metalcore and mathcore, featuring shifting song structures, highly technical guitar work, jagged rhythms and vocals that alternate between melodic lines and more aggressive attacks. After the early EPs Search for the Truth (2002) and A Calculated Use of Sound (2003), they released Kezia in 2005 and Fortress in 2008, the latter accentuating the progressive side of their writing. Scurrilous followed in 2011, and Volition arrived in 2013 — an independently financed release via pre-orders/crowdfunding, recorded with Chris Adler on drums. Pacific Myth was issued as a series of singles between 2015 and 2016, followed by Palimpsest in 2020. Protest the Hero has performed across North American and European metal, hardcore and punk scenes, notably via the Warped Tour and tours with Trivium, In Flames, Killswitch Engage and Darkest Hour. The band’s long-standing core remains Rody Walker, Tim MacMillar and Luke Hoskin; Hoskin stopped touring in 2021 but continues to contribute to writing and recording.
