Rise Against
Formed in Chicago in the late 1990s, Rise Against stands in the lineage of North American punk rock and melodic hardcore, with a taut yet highly melodic sound driven by Tim McIlrath’s vocals. Emerging from the local scene around McIlrath and bassist Joe Principe, the band released its debut album The Unraveling in 2001, followed by Revolutions per Minute in 2003, both rooted in the fast, abrasive aesthetics of hardcore punk. With Siren Song of the Counter Culture (2004) and The Sufferer & the Witness (2006), Rise Against broadened its song structures, brought in more sung choruses, and entered international rock circuits while maintaining ties to punk clubs and festivals. The arrival of guitarist Zach Blair in 2007 solidified a core around McIlrath, Principe, and drummer Brandon Barnes, heard on Appeal to Reason (2008), Endgame (2011), and The Black Market (2014), where the band blends brisk tempos, more mid-tempo passages, and atmospheres close to alternative rock. The albums Wolves (2017) and Nowhere Generation (2021) continue this approach, with lyrics focused on social tensions, American politics, and individual dilemmas in the face of power relations, placing the band at the crossroads of activist punk and more accessible rock.
