Armand Van Helden

Born in Boston in 1970, Armand Van Helden emerged in the early 1990s on the American house scene, at the crossroads of East Coast club culture and New York’s DJ scene. As a producer, remixer and DJ, he built a style centered on house and garage house, infused with disco, hip-hop and harder basslines, characterized by short loops, heavily chopped vocals and a production approach firmly geared towards the club. His remix of Tori Amos’s “Professional Widow” in 1996 and the track “You Don’t Know Me” with Duane Harden in 1999 marked this initial phase of his career. His solo discography includes Old School Junkies (1996), 2 Future 4 U (1998), Killing Puritans (2000), Gandhi Khan (2001), Nympho (2005) and Ghettoblaster (2007). Over the years Van Helden alternated between dancefloor-focused productions, remixes for pop and R&B, and side projects, including Duck Sauce, the duo he formed with A-Trak in the late 2000s. His trajectory thus mirrors the evolution of American house toward more hybrid forms while retaining a direct, club-rooted rhythmic base.
