Todd Terry

Born in 1967 in Brooklyn, Todd Terry is a house producer and DJ who emerged in the late 1980s on the New York scene with a series of club-focused 12-inch singles released under his name and aliases such as Royal House and Black Riot. Raised amid hip-hop, disco and funk, he developed a direct, rhythmic house aesthetic built on heavy use of samples, chopped vocal loops and simple but percussive basslines, situated between New York house and hip‑house. His productions first circulated on American independent labels and later found homes on European imprints, quickly embedding Terry in a transatlantic network of clubs and raves. In the mid-1990s he was prominent as a remixer for pop and alternative artists, notably Everything But The Girl, while continuing his own projects. The album Ready for a New Day (1997), followed by Resolutions (1999), extended his primarily 12-inch-oriented work into long-form records and included collaborations with vocalists such as Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown. Since then Todd Terry has remained active as a DJ and house producer, releasing EPs and remix series and performing sets at clubs and festivals, with a style that continues to blend disco heritage, hip-hop groove and club effectiveness.
