The Blessed Madonna
Within US club culture, The Blessed Madonna stands at the intersection of Chicago house, disco inheritances and a strong taste for experimental pop. Born Marea Stamper in Kentucky and later based in Chicago, she first developed through independent record shops and local scenes before becoming a resident and then artistic director of the Smartbar club in the early 2010s — a role that placed her at the heart of the city’s house revival. Under her former moniker The Black Madonna, she released a series of house- and disco-oriented maxi singles, notable for their extended structures and progressive builds, which circulated through European and North American club circuits. The name change to The Blessed Madonna in 2020 accompanied a public reflection on issues of representation in electronic music. Now established on major international stages, she alternates narrative DJ sets, original productions and remixes for pop and electronic artists, while maintaining close ties with queer communities and activist collectives from rave culture.
