Marshall Jefferson

Born in Chicago in 1959, Marshall Jefferson was part of the emergence of Chicago house in the mid-1980s, with a sound that fused house, deep house and structures drawn from dance and soul music. Initially active in Chicago’s studio scene, Marshall Jefferson released the track “Move Your Body” on Trax Records in 1986 — a song built around a piano motif that became one of the era’s landmarks. Over the years he also recorded under several aliases, including Virgo, Jungle Wonz, Truth and On the House, while working as a producer for other artists on the scene, notably CeCe Rogers, Sterling Void and Ten City, whom he supported during their early stages and on their first two albums. After a hiatus in the early 1990s he returned to DJing in 1993 and continued his career between the United States and the United Kingdom, where he later settled. Still active, Marshall Jefferson revisited “Move Your Body” in 2019 with Solardo and reunited with Byron Stingily in 2021 for “Be Free”, released under the name Ten City.
