Melanie Martinez
Born in Astoria, Queens and raised in Baldwin, New York State, Melanie Martinez first came to attention in 2012 on the show The Voice before developing a personal project centered on alternative pop with shades of dark pop, electropop and art pop. After the single “Dollhouse” and the Dollhouse EP in 2014, she constructed with Cry Baby (2015) a world where nursery rhymes, electronic textures, pop choruses and hip‑hop and R&B accents serve narratives about childhood, social norms and intimate struggles. This narrative dimension continues with K‑12 (2019), an album accompanied by a film written and directed by Melanie Martinez, then with the EP After School (2020), at times more directly autobiographical, and Portals (2023), where her writing moves toward more organic, rock‑influenced and experimental sounds while retaining her taste for highly staged characters and visual worlds. Melanie Martinez works as much on the song as on the image, with a stage identity marked by makeup, costume and storytelling, in a pop format that circulates between large venues, international tours and festivals. Among her occasional collaborations is “Copy Cat” with Tierra Whack.
