Princess Nokia
New York rapper and singer Princess Nokia, born Destiny Nicole Frasqueri, grew up between Spanish Harlem and the Lower East Side in an Afro‑Puerto Rican environment that strongly influences her writing. Initially active in the early 2010s under the pseudonym Wavy Spice, she released her first tracks online before adopting the name Princess Nokia and making a mark on New York’s independent rap scene. Her work moves between alternative hip‑hop, East Coast rap, R&B and punk, reggaeton and club influences, with lyrics addressing identity, gender, spirituality and everyday urban life. Princess Nokia drew attention with the project “Metallic Butterfly” in 2014 and with the mixtape “1992”, later expanded into the album “1992 Deluxe” in 2017, which consolidated her place on the international rap landscape. She followed with “A Girl Cried Red” in 2018, exploring an emo‑rap aesthetic, and the twin albums “Everything Is Beautiful” and “Everything Sucks” in 2020, illustrating the introspective and abrasive sides of her universe. Active on club and festival stages in Europe and the United States, Princess Nokia remains tied to DIY networks, queer communities and New York’s alternative scenes, where she develops a hybrid artistic practice combining rap, performance and political speech.
