Demob Happy
Born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 2008 and later based in Brighton, Demob Happy first formed as a quartet before continuing as a trio with Matthew Marcantonio on vocals and bass, Adam Godfrey on guitar, and Thomas Armstrong on drums. The band develops an alternative rock rooted in indie rock, grunge and garage, with thick riffs, tense melodies, and a sense of contrast between nervous energy and catchy pop hooks. After an initial EP, You Shook the Soul, in 2011, followed by the singles Rattlesnake in 2012 and Succubus in 2014, Demob Happy released Young & Numb EP in 2015, the same year as their debut album Dream Soda. The shift to a trio was confirmed in 2016 after the departure of guitarist Mathew Renforth, without altering the band's direction; on the contrary, they tightened their playing and live dynamics. In 2018 Holy Doom appeared, an album in which Demob Happy emphasized a more massive and direct songwriting approach, before continuing with several singles in the years that followed. Used to the British rock circuits and festivals, Demob Happy has also toured with Tigercub and supported Jack White in 2018. In 2023, the band released Divine Machines, extending this identity between psychedelic rock, post-grunge tension, and melodic choruses.
