Osees
Born in San Francisco around John Dwyer in the late 1990s, Osees began as a lo‑fi solo project before, through numerous name changes — OCS, Thee Oh Sees, Oh Sees and then Osees — becoming a band based in Los Angeles. Osees’ trajectory moves from an early noisy, acoustic folk to a tighter rock sound blending garage rock, psychedelia, punk and experimentation, with an increasing emphasis on repetitive motifs inspired by krautrock. The shift to a more stable lineup in the 2000s, notably including Brigid Dawson, Petey Dammit and Mike Shoun, accompanied the turn marked by The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In (2008), followed by Carrion Crawler/The Dream (2011) and Floating Coffin (2013). After a reconfiguration of the group in Los Angeles, Osees continued with Tim Hellman on bass, Dan Rincon and Paul Quattrone on drums, and later Tomas Dolas on keyboards, giving their live shows a dense, highly rhythmic drive. Orc (2017), Smote Reverser (2018), Face Stabber (2019), Protean Threat (2020), A Foul Form (2022), Intercepted Message (2023) and Sorcs 80 (2024) present a catalogue that alternates between tight formats, long psychedelic forays and hardcore surges.
