Amaarae
Born Ama Serwah Genfi in New York to a Ghanaian family and splitting her childhood between Accra, Atlanta, and New Jersey, Amaarae has forged an artistic identity shaped by movement across continents and cultures. From the mid-2010s onward, the singer and songwriter has developed a blend of pop, R&B, Afro-fusion, and alternative sounds marked by a high-pitched voice, minimalist melodies, and heavily syncopated rhythms. With the EP Passionfruit Summers in 2017, Amaarae positioned herself within the West African and online independent scenes before releasing in 2020 her debut full-length album, The Angel You Don’t Know, which features the track Sad Girlz Luv Money with Moliy; a 2021 remix with Kali Uchis and Moliy circulated widely on digital platforms. The 2023 album Fountain Baby extends this balance between electronic R&B ballads, Afro-Caribbean influences, and more club-oriented cuts, while addressing themes of desire, gender, and self-assertion. Based between Ghana and the United States, Amaarae pursues a career oriented toward the African diaspora, multiplies transnational collaborations, and is part of a network of artists for whom the boundaries between global pop and contemporary African music remain deliberately open.
