Steve Lacy

Born in Compton, California, Steve Lacy first came to prominence in the mid-2010s as a guitarist and producer with The Internet, Los Angeles’ leading group in alternative R&B. His writing blends contemporary R&B, neo-soul, psychedelic funk and pop with smooth guitar work, marked by a taste for short melodies, lo-fi textures, and songs centered on romantic relationships. Alongside the group, Lacy quickly developed a solo path with the 2017 EP Steve Lacy’s Demo, then broadened his scope with numerous contributions to projects by Kendrick Lamar, Solange, Kali Uchis, Blood Orange, Vampire Weekend, or Ravyn Lenae. His debut album Apollo XXI appeared in 2019 and confirmed a personal approach where modern soul, light rock and California funk heritage intersect. In 2020, he collected part of his early tracks on The Lo-Fis, before releasing Gemini Rights in 2022, a more direct and pop-oriented album driven by the track Bad Habit. Lacy then continues this trajectory with Oh Yeah? in 2026. Both a singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer, Steve Lacy occupies a singular place in the contemporary American scene, between band culture, work for other artists and a pop format open to psychedelic detours.
