Daniel Caesar

Born in Oshawa, Ontario, Daniel Caesar, whose real name is Ashton Simmonds, emerged in the mid-2010s within a space between contemporary R&B, soul, gospel and neo-soul. Raised in a religious environment, he incorporates a strong sense of vocal harmony and often spare arrangements into his music, blending piano, guitar and softer textures. After the EPs Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim’s Paradise (2015), circulated in Toronto’s independent scene, he widened his audience with Freudian in 2017 and continued with Case Study 01 in 2019 and Never Enough in 2023. His songwriting mixes introspective ballads, spiritual influences and slow R&B; his flexible voice favors subtlety over showiness. Daniel Caesar has also collaborated with artists such as Kali Uchis, H.E.R., Brandy, Justin Bieber and Tyler, The Creator, while maintaining an identity centered on melodic compositions and a strong singer-songwriter approach. He thus operates at the crossroads of modern soul, gospel and understated alternative pop.
