Mac DeMarco

A Canadian singer-songwriter born in Duncan, British Columbia, in 1990 and raised in Edmonton, Mac DeMarco emerged in the early 2010s on the North American indie scene after getting his start with the Vancouver band Makeout Videotape. After relocating to Montreal, he signed with the Captured Tracks label and released the EP Rock and Roll Night Club, followed by the album 2 in 2012, unveiling a blend of indie rock, jangle pop, and soft rock marked by laid-back tempos, deliberately rough-edged production, and a nonchalant vocal delivery. With Salad Days in 2014 and the mini-album Another One in 2015, DeMarco honed an intimate songwriting style focused on relationships, everyday life, and coming of age, while developing a warm, slightly psychedelic sonic aesthetic. Later settling in the United States, he continued with This Old Dog (2017) and Here Comes the Cowboy (2019), a run of more stripped-down records featuring spare arrangements and an introspective atmosphere. In 2023, DeMarco explored a primarily instrumental side with Five Easy Hot Dogs, recorded over the course of a road trip, then assembled a large collection of tracks and sketches on One Wayne G, extending an approach in which the spontaneity of home recording, understated humor, and a strong live presence foster a direct connection with an international audience, from intimate clubs to major festivals.
