Miguel
Born in San Pedro, the port district of Los Angeles, Miguel Jontel Pimentel developed an early interest in R&B and African American popular music, shaped by his Mexican and African American heritage. Under the name Miguel, he began in the mid-2000s to attract attention with demos and studio collaborations, before signing with Jive Records and releasing his debut album in 2010, All I Want Is You, which blends contemporary R&B with hip-hop touches and soul ballads. With Kaleidoscope Dream (2012), Miguel honed a more experimental aesthetic where rock, funk, psychedelic, and pop influences intersect, supported by meticulous work on vocal textures and arrangements. Wildheart (2015) pushed this direction further toward a more electric, guitar-driven R&B, while War & Leisure (2017) introduced brighter tones and collaborations with the American rap and R&B scene, notably J. Cole. Between albums, Miguel has multiplied guest appearances, soundtracks, and EPs, building a trajectory in which soul-inflected writing, slow rhythms, and melancholic melodies hold a central place in his work as a singer-songwriter.
