Gas
Within Cologne's electronic scene, Gas emerged in the mid‑1990s as one of Wolfgang Voigt's principal projects; Voigt is a German producer also associated with the labels Profan, Mille Plateaux and Kompakt. Gas developed a sound that sits between ambient, ambient techno, minimal techno and psychedelia, featuring long pieces built from misty soundscapes, heavily processed loops and a steady 4/4 techno pulse, in an aesthetic often linked to the forest landscape of the Königsforst near Cologne. After the EP Modern in 1995, Gas released the albums Gas (1996), Zauberberg (1997), Königsforst (1998) and Pop (2000) — an initial cycle in which tracks were often untitled and conceived more as continuous flows than distinct songs. The project then went on hiatus, its catalogue compiled on Nah und Fern in 2008 and later collected in Box in 2016. Gas resurfaced with new albums — Narkopop (2017), Rausch (2018) and Der Lange Marsch (2021) — extending an immersive, slow and dense approach that straddles abstract ambient and techno movement.
