Plaid

In London, since the early 1990s Andy Turner and Ed Handley have developed the Plaid project, first in the wake of The Black Dog, of which they were founding members, before establishing a duo focused on melodic electronic music at the crossroads of IDM, techno, ambient and a rhythmically highly segmented instrumental pop. Plaid constructs music made of soft pulsations, precise synthetic motifs and tempo variations that avoid the frontal impact of the dancefloor without straying too far from it. Their career has traversed several labels, including Warp, and through a regular discography notably Not for Threes (1997), Rest Proof Clockwork (1999), Double Figure (2001), Spokes (2003), Scintilli (2011), Reachy Prints (2014), The Digging Remedy (2016), Polymer (2019) and Feorm Falorx (2022). Plaid has also carried out substantial remix work, partly gathered on Parts in the Post (2003) and then Stem Sell (2021), while collaborating with artists such as Björk, Nicolette, or Mara Carlyle. On stage, the duo has often coupled its sonic universe with visual propositions, notably with Bob Jaroc around the Greedy Baby project, and has also composed for film, in particular the soundtracks for Tekkonkinkreet (2006) and Heaven’s Door (2008) for director Michael Arias.
