Moodymann

Under the name Moodymann, producer and DJ Kenny Dixon Jr. has been developing since the mid‑1990s a personal vision of Detroit house steeped in soul, funk, jazz and R&B. A Detroit native, he has crafted a slow, dense strain of deep house characterized by vocal samples, warm drum loops and field recordings captured in the city, where spoken word and groove are as important as melody. After a string of maxi singles on his own KDJ imprint, a first milestone came with the album Silentintroduction (1997), which collected several standout tracks, followed by Mahogany Brown (1998) and Forevernevermore (2000), affirming his roots in a house closely tied to Detroit’s soul legacy. Moodymann extended this approach with Silence in the Secret Garden (2003) and Black Mahogani (2004), released notably on KDJ and the British label Peacefrog, while increasing his DJ sets at clubs and festivals devoted to electronic music and house culture. Firmly established, he later released the albums Moodymann (2014), Sinner (2019) and Taken Away (2020), a continuation of work that intertwines commentary on Detroit, African‑American heritage and club culture. Active both as a DJ and a producer and often associated with the constellation of Detroit house and techno, Moodymann blends house, disco, boogie and fragments of hip‑hop to create an immediately recognizable rhythmic signature.
