Matthew Herbert

British producer, composer and DJ born in 1972, Matthew Herbert has since the mid-1990s developed work at the crossroads of minimal house, downtempo, musique concrète, jazz and orchestral writing. Under the names Herbert, Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy or Wishmountain he initially released records tied to the British electronic scenes — 100lbs (1996), Around the House (1998) and Bodily Functions (2001) — where club rhythms, vocals and everyday sounds are integrated into a very precise construction. A large part of his output is based on recording objects, gestures and real environments, a principle Herbert extended into conceptual projects such as Plat du Jour (2005), One Club (2010) and One Pig (2011). At the same time he pursued a jazz direction with The Matthew Herbert Big Band on Goodbye Swingtime (2003), There's Me and There's You (2008) and The State Between Us (2019), while also composing for film and contemporary ensembles. A regular collaborator of Dani Siciliano, producer of Róisín Murphy's Ruby Blue and a contributor to Björk's Vespertine, Herbert also released The Shakes (2015), Musca (2021) and several original scores for Sebastián Lelio's films.
